Mayor Gross Urges New Council Toward Emergency Generators

West Easton is lacking emergency generator systems which would power buildings in the borough that provide vital services.

Mayor Gross brought up the subject at the December 14th council meeting, asking that those who will be on the Council in 2016 look at installing generator systems for a couple of buildings in the borough.

He reminded us of Superstorm Sandy that left the borough without power for many days and during that time the borough was shut down during the power loss. He had brought up the subject at the beginning of this year, when he proposed one for the Municipal Building and the firehouse, he said.

It might be a grant item, he indicated to Councilman Dan DePaul, who is in charge of seeking grants.

Council President Kelly Gross stated research has been done on generators systems for the Municipal Building and the Community Center on 6th Street.

Mayor Gross asked the new council to put it on their “Things To Do” list and said he would be glad to help the Council if they needed it.

It’s an idea that should be pursued.

The generators would be the type that are run on natural gas, perform a self-diagnostic, and automatically start before automatically switching to generator power, when it detects a full power loss to the building.

Warning! (In case Councilman Nodoline fears someone will kill themselves): Please don’t listen to your wife and try wire in a Power Transfer Switch for one of these generators, if you have no knowledge of electricity. Joking aside, these types generators do require an electrician, as the automatic transfer system is extremely complex and beyond the capability of the average DIY homeowner.

These automatic systems are much more involved than the simple manual power transfer switch for small portable generators, that I reviewed and was brought up at a recent council meeting (clip below).
