During what was likely the final January 6th Hearing, the Committee provided damning evidence against former President Trump, who allegedly tried to prevent the peaceful transfer of power after his loss to Joe Biden.
Many Republicans who believe in the Constitution, and actually watched the hearings, have peeled away from his cult following. Still, there will always be those who believe the election was stolen, and the insurrectionists who stormed the Capital Building were, “Patriots.”
The hardcore members of his cult will never be swayed. Polls suggest Trump still has anywhere from 15-25 percent of Republicans who still believe the election was stolen.
This is due to their refusal to watch the hearings, and to only watch “news” networks that repeat the lies from Trump without any fact checking. They are in a self-feeding loop of QAnon, OAN News, ultra right-wing chat rooms, Trump’s failing “Truth” platform, and anything else supporting their orange Wizard of Oz.
They are devoted Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson fans. These two, who call themselves “Opinion” commentators are mouthpieces for Trump, promoting Trumps message to millions of Americans in an extended distribution of misinformation that Trump can’t promote himself, due to his being banned on the biggest social media platforms for posting proven lies.
If Trump actually admitted to planning a coup, inciting the riot on January 6th, and hoping his Vice-President would be hung by the mob, his cult followers wouldn’t be swayed.
During his initial candidacy, and while President, he insulted or disparaged just about every segment of the population, yet he was given a pass. Rather than push back against his bigotry, and message of hate, his followers embraced the division he caused.
Trump’s newest claim that he didn’t know the riot was occurring and the Capital Building had been breached? Proven false by testimony from his own former staff.
He was aware that there were armed people outside the metal detectors where he gave his, “Fight Like Hell” speech at the Ellipse. Despite knowing it, he asked law enforcement to remove those metal detectors, and allow them to enter.
He knew these very same people would go to the Capital Building upon his direction to do so. Those carrying weapons, wearing body armor, and some holding riot shields.
Hours passed as Trump did nothing to quell the riot. Capital Police were injured, the mob entered the Capital Building, and sought to find Vice-President Pence, Speaker Pelosi, and others for retribution, as they ransacked offices, and literally spread shit in the building.
It was Pence, and other leaders from both parties, who sought assistance from local law enforcement agencies. Trump had abandoned his duty as President, despite pleas from his own staff to tell the rioters to go home.
It wasn’t until those outside forces began arriving did Trump finally record a message that ended the assault. Trump realized his coup wasn’t going to succeed.
In his message, he told the rioters, “We love you.” He must have been using the Royal “We,” as I doubt the police who fought the Oath Keepers and other crazies, or the elected representatives, who had to shelter in fear, had that same feeling of love.
Despite knowing he lost the election, even before he called his followers to his Washington “rally,” Trump continued to promote his “stolen election” narrative. He still promotes it to this day, trying to keep the fire alive in his followers.
Will the mountain of evidence the January 6th Committee presented sway the Trump cultists?
Never. Because, one question is more important to them, than a President who wanted to be an oligarch. A President who hoped for a coup. A President who put his own desire to retain power, above the Constitution.
“What about Hunter Biden’s laptop?” That is what they care about.
Now that the January 6th Committee has issued a subpoena for Trump to testify, it’s doubtful he’ll appear, because Donald “Heel Spurs” Trump is a coward. If he does, his every answer will be like those of others who conspired with him, and he’s used in the past.
