West Easton residents should set some time aside on the evening of December 23rd in order to attend the 2nd West Easton council meeting this month.
The meeting will cover not only the budget for the coming year, but the status of the planned police force, among the other items on the agenda.
What should be of major concern to residents is how West Easton plans to fill in any gap of direct police protection until the requirements of the state are achieved, as the hoped for January 1, 2014 target date of implementing our own police protection is unlikely to be met.
How police protection for residents will be handled during the interim is likely to be discussed at this meeting
As written about previously, the West Easton mayor and council have had to come up with an alternative to police protection being contracted with the City of Easton, due to Easton Mayor Sal Panto refusing to renew a police contract with us. Official notice from Panto came this past summer via a letter. Wilson Borough has also refused to discuss the possibility of contracting with us.
Rather than reading on this website about where we stand, or reading a naysayer editorial by people who don’t live in our community, you should attend this meeting to get a first-hand account of how this most serious of subjects is progressing.
While The Express-Times editor, Jim Deegan, finds it easy to parrot one who can find fault by comparing a plan to a “1950’s time warp” and poking holes in it, I am willing to at least let our West Easton governing body try to meet the objective without an overly burdensome tax increase.
The Council Meeting begins at 7:00 PM and takes place at the West Easton Municipal Building located on 7th Street.
I’ll be there and would like to see some new faces in attendance. It’s your community and its time to show an interest in it by giving up an hour of your time watching television and coming to the meeting.
Admission is free.
