As I begin writing this, there is still 45 minutes left before the polls close at 8:00 pm. I left the polling area a few minutes ago and just arrived home. I wanted to write this while the experience was fresh in my mind.
I would describe it as surreal for this tiny borough, considering that it would have been a yawner if not for Democrat Vernon Moore and Henry Nodoline putting themselves up as write-in candidates.
When I left, I was told 155 voters had cast ballots. I don’t know how many of those were Republicans and how many were Democrats. I won’t find out for another hour, at which time I will post the results.
Outside the voting area it was a bit odd.
One group consisted of Democrat candidate Kelly Gross, Democrat write-in candidate Vernon Moore, and Democrat Councilman Tom Nodoline. Tom and Kelly were providing instructions to voters on how to submit Vernon Moore’s name as a write-in.
Republican candidate Tricia Mezzacappa and Democrat candidate Robert Lewis shared time in another area.
The third area consisted of write-in candidate Henry Nodoline and Democrat Councilman Dan DePaul, assisting Nodoline.
The only one smart enough to stay out of the fray was Democrat candidate Ronald Nixon, who appeared briefly with his wife to vote and then, intelligently, got the Hell out of Dodge.
I decided to sit with Dan DePaul and Henry Nodoline. With me was my dog, Maverick, that I took with me for the walk down to the polling place. He was my walking billboard, as I attached a couple of small 3″ x 5″ campaign stickers to his harness.
I am probably not a favorite of Kelly and Tom and I get the distinct feeling that I didn’t get their votes.
Was it something I wrote?
I write what I believe and no doubt my video recordings of council meetings are something they would rather not have uploaded.
Republicans mixed with Democrats! Democrats fracturing their own party! An actual contested primary, followed by a contested election. Oh, my!
I am glad to see it, no matter the outcome. No matter who wins and loses, it’s about time that candidates work to get elected and work we did. Most of us sought to get out voters.
Myself included.
I spent much of the day on Saturday walking West Easton and placing notices on Democrat doors that a write-in candidate was being promoted by a sitting councilman looking to retain a pocket vote. I asked them to vote for me, instead.
Tricia Mezzacappa had robo-calls go out to voters.
Henry Nodoline contacted people to write in his name.
I have no doubt Tom Nodoline did the same for Vernon Moore.
I love a Democracy and I love the fact that residents had a choice this primary.
The polls are closing soon. Will post the results as soon as I have them.
