special_education_teacher_buttonSpecial Needs children probably won’t have their education interrupted this year due to a strike by teachers.

Teachers and support staff ratified a tentative contract agreement with Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 last night.

The 390 members of the teachers and support personnel overwhelmingly approved the agreement and it will be presented to the CIU 20 Board of Directors this evening for their approval.

If the BoD approves the agreement it will avert a potential strike that was approved by the teachers earlier this month. Teachers had been working under an expired contract for more than a year.

CIU 20 provides transportation and learning support for special needs children in the counties of Northampton, Monroe, and Pike.

Bus drivers, monitors, and other transportation support personnel had previously approved a separate contract which was ratified by both sides earlier in the month. They had been working without a contract since organizing their union in October of 2011.

Details of the teachers contract will be released only when the Board of Directors approves the agreement, though sources, who wish to remain anonymous, believe the contract will award a 3.2% pay increase to teachers with a 1-year retroactive payment included.

Dr. Charlene Brennan, Director of CIU 20 expects the contract to be approved by the Board.
