I have requested that “SMS Resident Alert” be added as an Agenda item at the upcoming Council meeting, on March 13th.

This is an item that came about when Borough Manager, Joan Heebner asked me how I would feel about the Borough using a text message service, so that important information could be relayed to residents as quickly as possible, when the need arises.

I thought it to be a great idea and began researching it.

I’m hoping to get a pilot program started with Council approval.

SMS stands for Short Message Service and is also commonly referred to as a “text message”. With a SMS, you can send a message of up to 160 characters to another device. Longer messages will automatically be split up into several parts. Most cell phones support this type of text messaging.

Our neighboring communities of Bethlehem, Wilson, and Palmer have a SMS system in use. They subscribe to a service called, Nixle. Palmer contracted with Nixle in June of last year.
