Safety First Volunteer Fire Company (SFVFC) sent a proposal to Council requesting $17,825. It would be used to pay insurance coverage on their property, vehicles, portable equipment, and other items.
The request came only two weeks after I wrote that the impression of Council was that the SFVFC had worked out support problems between themselves and their support organizations of the SFVFC Social Club and Ladies Auxiliary.
While The Ladies Auxiliary is financially sound and has been providing support, the Social Club appears to be on shaky ground, having many wondering if the club’s collapse is imminent.
SFVFC’s problem with the lack of support from the Social Club was first brought up in September of last year. SFVFC representatives met with Council’s Safety Committee that month to inform them of the situation.
Council had not received any formal request for funds until this past Monday evening at the Council Meeting.
Council tabled a motion to pay the insurance bill, pending inquiries into why the SFVFC Social Club is lacking the money from operations and unable to support the Fire Department with the financial aid that usually covers the cost of insurance.
However, tabling the motion until the August meeting meant that the insurance bill would come due before the next Council meeting.
The Ladies Auxiliary stepped up and will cover the insurance cost, likely in a quarterly payment, until Council meets again in August.
It is expected Council will approve a quarterly reimbursement amount to the Ladies Auxiliary. The money for reimbursement will come from a contingency line item in the budget that is available for this type of situation.
