West Easton’s newly hired I.T. company sent out a warning about the newest scams finding their way to people’s emails.
“I wanted all of you to know that both independent security researchers and our own team have seen attackers continue to prey on peoples fears of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a recent TechRepublic article it was reported a significant spike in COVID-19 related email phishing attacks, “up a whopping 667% since the end of February.”
Attack goals range from distributing malware to stealing credentials for financial gain. One new type of ransomware that Barracuda systems detected has even taken on the COVID-19 namesake and dubbed itself CoronaVirus.
I just wanted to remind you to NOT open ANY emails that claim to have news updates or new information about the COVID-19 or coronavirus pandemic. If you receive communications from a source to which you do not normally subscribe, please delete it immediately, especially if it contains links.
Thank you for your diligence in these unusual times.”
