While the hoped for Police Chief being sworn in this month wasn’t achieved, the light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer and brighter.
Police Consultant Robert Mahady, who will eventually be made West Easton’s Top Cop, gave his report of the Police Department status at the June 10th Council meeting.
There were still a few requirements needed before swearing him in as Chief, he reported to Council. Council will not swear him into office until he notifies the governing body that he feels ready to assume the role.
At the meeting Mr. Mahady reported that computers and peripheral equipment that had been ordered were delayed. He was also still working on assembling manuals and operating procedures for the department, so that officers hired would have proper guidelines to follow. Eventually, there will also be a need for a secure area to store any evidence that may be collected by police.
The computers have since arrived and were installed late last week. He expects to have the guidelines and procedures compiled before the next Council meeting in July. A secure evidence room of some type is a matter that Council will address and has time to resolve.
It is expected that Mr. Mahady will announce at the July Council meeting, a date he would feel comfortable being sworn in as Chief of Police.
His being sworn in as Chief will not mean that cars will begin rolling, or calls will be answered by our police department as soon as he takes on his new role.
Once made Chief, Mr. Mahady will begin interviewing for part-time police officers. He will give recommendations to Council, which will decide which officers to hire. There will also be smaller details he will be working on to ready the department.
On the bright side, with a Chief in place, it is likely abandoned cars will be seen getting towed out of the borough.
So, be patient a little longer. We’re almost there.
