Threat of West Easton Flooding Recedes With Ice Jam

Lehigh Drive in West Easton has been closed for days due to the ice jam that raised water levels and created an ice skating rink on the roadway.

Last night, a car somehow made it’s way through the “road closed” signs and into the flooded roadway, ending up in about 4 feet of water. The female driver was not injured in the incident.

Mayor Gross has been watching the river level daily and it would appear that with the slow rise in temperature today the water seems to be slowly beginning to flow once again and water levels are dropping.

The ice itself has receded by a few feet today, according to local observers.

The worry is that should the ice jam break up too quickly due to the rising temperatures, large chunks of ice might only travel a short distance downstream before jamming up again with additional ice chunks traveling behind it, creating an ice dam. In this scenario water would rise behind the icedam and flooding would again be possible.

“If it breaks up piecemeal, maybe we’ll be in good shape,” said Mayor Gross.

The worst case scenario is becoming more remote as each day passes and the melting temperatures take a gradual rise.

Temperatures are predicted to continue to rise tomorrow and through the weekend.
