Residents at Monday’s Council Meeting reported that at least 5 unlocked cars in West Easton were pilfered for loose change and small items.
Police Chief Robert Mahady, who is currently completing administrative requirements of rolling out a part-time police department, was at the council meeting and provided the public some of his insight, as a retired State Trooper.
Actual “break-ins” of cars in the surrounding areas were virtually non-existent in those years he served as a State Trooper, noting one exception of a truck that had a window broken and its radio stolen.
“These are crimes of opportunity, in which thieves enter unlocked cars,” he noted.
Past video recordings from residents who have home security cameras have confirmed that these thieves are opportunists who, as they walk past vehicles, pull on door handles to see if the cars are unlocked.
West Easton has, in the past, urged residents to ensure their cars are locked. It will renew the effort to inform residents of the need to be sure their cars are locked at night.
Expect to see notifications appear on the Borough’s website, Facebook page, and newsletters reminding residents to lock their car doors.
