I happened to be at the Exxon station at the intersection of Old Mill Road and Sullivan Trail this morning shortly after a traffic accident occurred near that intersection.
An unidentified driver who was filling his vehicle was watching the clearing operation of the accident from his vantage point at the gas station and not paying attention to the pump he was at.
It was estimated by the clerk at the station that about a half gallon of gas overflowed from his vehicle before the driver stopped the pump.
The problem for him was, because it just finished raining heavily, the water spread a thin sheen of gasoline over approximately 15 feet of surface area near the pump.
Normally, such a spill would have been taken care of with some kitty litter by the station employees, but with police on the scene for the accident, it became more involved.
Three police cars, three officers, a fire truck and three fireman descended on the station.
While I think that a cleanup was needed it bothers me that the public is given the perception that the EPA gives a damn about the environment. The EPA sets guidelines for cleaning up such spills and we often see an overpowering force dealing with spilled fuel at gas stations. It makes us think that the government cares.
Meanwhile, fracking areas are a cesspool of contaminated land that leaks poison waste water from those operations back into our water supply.
