When I first launched this website it was intended to fill a void that existed online for the residents of West Easton. I wrote a previous article about the “official” West Easton website that might help explain why we don’t have one.
In the beginning I made it known that this website was open to the Mayor and anyone on Council who wanted to submit information, or an opinion piece. I also made it clear that I would write about the happenings in West Easton, good or bad.
Council President Kelly Gross had forwarded me information in the past regarding upcoming events, such as the “Anything With A Plug” recycling day and others.
It wasn’t long after the launch of this website that information, I thought would be easily obtained in order to share it with the public, became difficult to get. Specifically, approved minutes of meetings and permit applications.
I would like to think that I am fair in my opinions. I believe the duties of governing the borough with a limited tax base and increasing costs for services is a thankless job. It can be wrought with landmines that are placed in a leader’s path either through actions of others, or their own.
I have a great deal of respect for the governing body, if for no other reason that to be a public official opens one up to criticism. Sometimes, as one resident is known for, criticism with a foul mouth and multiple identities used to post comments on local newspaper websites.
At times it pains me to actually agree with this resident regarding the lack of transparency in our borough’s business.
I wasn’t kind in my assessment of having our taxes raised on the premise of creating our own police department, only to have that money spent elsewhere.
One of my most recent articles regarding the death of Councilman Charlie Stout Jr. caused a stir and embarrassment for a couple of people.
Jim Deegan, editor of The Express-Times picked up on it a month later and it has become a firestorm for Mayor Gross and his daughter, Kelly.
Neither requested an opportunity to respond to that article or others I have posted, so once again I am inviting anyone – the Mayor or any council member – to provide me with a statement that they wish to have appear on this website.
I will print it in its entirety, without length limit, changes, or comment. It would afford them an opportunity to be heard before the next council meeting in September, where the only record of their statement might end up being a note in the minutes, or a few lines in the local papers.
Mr. Mayor, Council,
The floor is yours.
