One of the cheapest and most abundant commodities on earth seems to be in short supply this winter.

Road salt is on many town and city wish lists, but nobody seems to be able to get what they need.

Nazareth Area School District kept schools closed yesterday because Bushkill Township ran out of salt and the road conditions were so hazardous yesterday morning that it was felt the risk of running buses in the area was too great.

Salt seems to be in short supply everywhere and some are blaming the supplier, International Salt, for the dilemma.

The Northampton County Division of Emergency Management Services said, as of 3:30 p.m. Thursday, it had received from municipalities nine disaster declarations, eight resource requests, and learned that 17 out of 38 municipalities needed salt.

Complaints from some municipalities are that deliveries either aren’t being made, or that promised amounts are short when delivery does occur.

NOTE: I would be remiss if I do not credit that the shortage of road salt was first reported by blogger Bernie O’Hare on January 30th, before the local papers or television news picked up the story. Also of note is that though I was told West Easton had a supply of salt I have yet to see any applied to the roadways during the last two major storms.
