At 11:00 this morning, I was inside my house and heard what sounded like banging on my wall, followed by a crash outside my front door.
It shook so hard it knocked a picture frame off my wall and I thought somebody was going to break my door down.
So, like any normal person I grabbed my gun…
I’m just messing with you. No picture frame fell and I never grabbed my gun, although my wall did shake.
However, I did lose the overhang above my door that ran the full length of the house from front to back.
I had noticed the seam near the top looked odd after that last major storm with the high winds came through. I assumed that wind had possibly lifted some shingles and the flashing along with it. I was going to go up there and check it out tomorrow.
A neighbor was nice enough to give me a hand clearing some of the debris so I could get in and out of my front door and I’ve contacted my insurance company.
At one point during our cleanup my neighbor thought he saw shoes protruding from underneath the pile of wood and gave me a shout.
When I looked in his direction, trying to focus on what he was pointing to, I also saw them.
“STOP!” I yelled. “Back away slowly. Let’s take a break and come back to it in an hour. It might still be alive”
We had a few beers on the back porch and about 2 hours later went back to the cleanup.
Regrettably, what we thought were wicked witch shoes were simply two matching lawn ornaments that got crushed at the edge of the debris.
I guess everyone can’t have Dorothy’s luck.
Joking aside, I’m glad nobody was underneath it at the time. It would have likely killed them. I still have a mess to clean up, but at least I’ll get some new siding out of it.
