It appears the hope of saving the trestles for use in the D&L Trail System will come to an end.
In a brief update from Alfred Benesch & Company, hired for a required PennDot in-depth report on the trestles above Iron and Spring Streets, the wooden sections of trestles are so degraded that rehabilitation or repair is not advised.
A brief correspondence from the engineering firm reported on the timber structures. “We observed significant decay as a result of exposure to wetness/moisture on numerous types of timber members.”
The representative from Benesch also wrote, “…we anticipate providing a report with a recommendation that will indicate these bridges should not be rehabilitated and converted to a recreational use structure/facility.”
A complete report to be delivered to PennDot, and a copy retained by West Easton, should be ready in the next few weeks.
