In an effort to promote conservation and seeking an example of ways residents can reduce water bills, I visited Home Depot last week and talked to their store manager.

Mr. Tim Oakley had no hesitation in fulfilling my request for two 50-gallon rain barrels that West Easton would give away to residents in a free drawing to promote conservation. Many thanks to Mr. Oakley and Home Depot in supporting West Easton with the donation of these planter rain barrels.

The rain barrels (which also double as flower planters) are designed to collect water from roof runoff. The water can be used for a number of purposes, including watering lawns, gardens, and washing cars. The water should not be used for human consumption, bathing, or cooking.

If every home in West Easton averaged just one rain barrel collection per month, it would reduce storm water runoff into our local river by 314,400 gallons each year. The reduction of this runoff flow would decrease the amount of sediments and pollution collected from roadways, as it makes its way to the river.

The drawing for a free rain barrel is open to all whose primary residence is in West Easton. Only one entry per LOT address. Other rules and restrictions apply. The barrels can be viewed at Borough Hall.
