Last week, the federal TRACED Act was signed into law, which is aimed at restoring consumers’ trust in Caller ID, imposing penalties against illegal robocallers and carriers who knowingly accept their traffic, and enhanced industry-government coordination on tracing back illegal calls.

In Pennsylvania, we recently enacted a new law which removes the renewal requirement and provides residents with the ability to register their phone numbers on the Pennsylvania Do Not Call list permanently. Currently, phone numbers must be re-registered every five years.

Act 73 of 2019 also aims to reduce the annoyance of telemarketing calls by banning the calls on legal holidays. Computerized auto-dialers (robocalls) would be required to give residents an “opt-out” option at the beginning of the call. The measure also allows businesses to register their numbers on the state’s Do Not Call list.
