Most of you are probably aware I won re-election as Councilman, and I won the position of West Easton Constable, but what I wasn’t aware of was being elected to a 4-year term as a Minority Inspector of Elections in West Easton.
Considering I hadn’t run for the position of Inspector of Elections, I was surprised to get a letter today from the Elections Board informing me of my victory.
A Minority Inspector is paid $175 on Election Day. A 14 hour day (getting to the polling area well before it opens and not leaving until all the paperwork is done) amounts to around $12.50/hour. Not too shabby, compared to $0 as Constable and $0.17 an hour as Council President. And that $175 is in cash, so no taxes are taken out.
I thought it to be a mistake, so I called the Office of Elections today to clear up the snafu and correct the error.
It was no mistake.
Apparently, my name was written in and it’s one of those situations where, when nobody is actually on the ballot, you can be elected with write-in vote(s).
I swear it wasn’t me. I only wrote my name in for Dog Catcher.
While I appreciate the thought from the person, or persons, who wrote in my name, it’s a position I can’t accept.
Literally, I can’t accept it. As a sitting Councilman, I am ineligible unless I resign my Council seat.
Now, there’s a thought.
