Safety First Fire Chief Bill Bogari, Jr. addressed the West Easton Council on Monday, requesting they support adopting a new fire code ordinance for the borough. He would like the International Fire Code adopted, rather than the one being used today.

Chief Bogari informed the Council and public in attendance that the Borough is using the BOCA Fire Prevention Code from 1987 and it is not current. He requested, in 2010, that the Council at that time adopt the International Fire Code, but they instead created a new Resolution that continued the use of the BOCA Code.

The Fire Chief and Borough Solicitor worked together in drafting an ordinance that would legally “marry” current codes with the updated ones.

The International Fire Code would add more teeth to enforcement, allowing the Code Enforcement Officer to conduct inspections of those who rent out rooms and those businesses in the industrial areas to ensure they are in compliance. Something the Code Enforcement Officer can not do with the existing fire code.

Fines for summary offenses under the new code can reach $1000 and up to 90 days in jail.
