Halloween means carving pumpkins and the art of carving has gone far beyond the days of triangles for eyes and a half moon for a mouth. If you think this picture at left, or any of the pictures below are of my Halloween pumpkin carvings I have to admit that I have trouble carving a steak, let alone a pumpkin for Halloween. I’m still waiting for my DVD from Ray Villafane, probably the best known and respected pumpkin carver, when he isn’t practicing his skill sculpting in clay, or sand. Mr. Villafane lives in Arizona and has toured the world, giving carving and sculpting exhibitions.
If you like what you see and want to try some pumpkin carving with the help of Mr. Villafane, who teaches you his secrets on video, you can order his DVD here. It will keep the kids busy, if not you.
If you like what you see and want to treat the kids (and yourself) to a day out, you can take in an event in which Ray Villafane will be present. It’s not a standard hay ride, or pumpkin maze, but is in driving distance and might be something the youngsters actually remember when they get older. He and his pumpkin friends will be at The New York Botanical Garden on October 19th & 20th. The NYBG is located in Bronx, NY.
Giant Pumpkin Carving Weekend
October 19 & 20; 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
At the Clay Family Picnic Pavilions
Giant pumpkins from around the world, expected to weigh in at more than 1,800 pounds each, once again arrive at the Garden. Arranged in collaboration with the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth, the recognized standard of weights, measurements, and fairness of competition, these winners of global pumpkin weigh-offs will be transformed by Master Carver Ray Villafane of Food Network fame.
On this one exclusive weekend, watch Villafane and his team transform these wonders of nature into an amazing sculptural display of carnivorous plants and other unearthly creatures. Enjoy daily Q&A sessions with the carvers and snack on seasonal treats
Q&A with the Master Carvers & Growers
12, 1, 2, 3, & 4 p.m.
Master Carvers stop for a moment to share how they came up with their creative ideas to transform the giant pumpkins into works of art before your eyes and the growers of these giants tell of the unique techniques used to get them so big. Have the chance to ask these talented artists and farmers your burning questions. Additional Roaming Guides will be on hand for questions throughout the day.
