The unofficial national holiday was created in 1983 when Rep. Robert Walker declared his favorite food deserved its own day. But in April 2003, then-Governor Ed Rendell made it official when he re-declared the commemorative day.
The chain was founded in 1998 by college friends, Dan DiZio and Len Lehman, who created a recipe unique to Philly that could be shared beyond the region. Today, Philly Soft Pretzel operates more than 150 locations on the east coast, from New York to Florida.
