During a recent council meeting, when a discussion arose about the poor state of sidewalks that have been neglected by homeowners, a resident commented that there were a couple of slabs of sidewalk owned by the Borough that should be addressed.
I agreed, as I knew of the slabs he was referring to at Gross Park, and volunteered to inspect them myself, and start the process of replacing them.
I also wanted to address the problem of uneven sections of walkways, while I was at it.
Due to our soil, and the codes at the time when the walkways were poured, sidewalks can become trip hazards over the decades, as some slabs heave up and others settle. Taking my walk-about, I noticed the trip hazards should be addressed immediately, while quotes were awaited for slab replacement.
I presented my findings to Council for removing the trip hazards along our walkways, where needed. A company that uses a polymer agent injected under the slabs will remove the trip hazards. The cost for the entire job is $4,150, and was approved by Council on Monday evening.
Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of November. There is a 10 year guarantee on their polymer work, unlike a mud-jacking process of leveling that usually offers no guarantees, because washouts of the material used often occurs.
Below is a map of the areas that will be addressed. You’ll see there is a large amount of walkways. It would have cost far more to have replaced them.
