In one week, officially beginning at about 1:20 PM on August 21st, West Easton will see the sunshine getting a little less bright. By 2:43 PM it may be noticeably darker and the sun will be partially obscured by a large disk covering much of it.
But don’t sacrifice a virgin to a volcano, just yet. A 73% obscuration is as far as the Gods will punish us, before the disk slowly moves off to the left. The next one won’t occur in our area until 2024, which will result in about a 90% obscuration.
The partial solar eclipse, caused by the moon passing in front of the sun, will end in our area shortly before 4:00 PM. The big show will be happening in South Carolina, in the path of a total eclipse and complete darkness.
Information to note:
Children should be warned not to look directly at the eclipse. Doing so can cause permanent blindness or damage.
While fairly inexpensive eclipse glasses (~ $5) are being sold and approved safe, there are already reports of disreputable merchants selling dark sunglasses (worth about 25 cents) as eclipse glasses. Proper eclipse glasses, when looking at a light bulb, should allow absolutely no light to be seen. All you should see is complete blackness.
