I’m going to cause more than a few good Catholic relatives to spin in their graves with this opinion, but the hypocrisy is just too much to ignore. I’m also fairly certain that I’ll find myself on the torture list, should there be another round of medieval inquisitions.
Pope Francis has called on the UN to do more to help the poor and encourage the “legitimate redistribution” of wealth.
“In the case of global political and economic organization, much more needs to be achieved, since an important part of humanity does not share in the benefits of progress and is in fact relegated to the status of second-class citizens,” Francis told Ban Ki-Moon on Friday.
During his latest meeting with UN officials, the Pope said that despite the decrease in poverty, “the world’s peoples deserve and expect even greater results.”
An awareness of everyone’s human dignity should encourage everyone “to share with complete freedom the goods which God’s providence has placed in our hands,” Francis said, Reuters reported.
So, as a non-practicing Catholic myself, I have to ask, “How much of the Roman Catholic Church’s wealth will be sold and the proceeds redistributed to the poor?” In a followup question, “Will any money be distributed to the victims of pedophile priests that will help those victims regain some of that human dignity mentioned?”
While His Eminence gets some news coverage for being so courageous on calling for rich nations to help the poor, his message would be better received if he had first given a couple of billion dollars in the Vatican vaults to those poor people he mentions.
