West Easton’s Police Department is still in its infancy, with only Police Chief Robert Mahady hired and able to do patrols when he can.
It was hoped by this time there would have been additional police hired, but delays in paperwork requirements and the pandemic set the time schedule back months.
Police Chief Robert Mahady was given approval by Council to hire up to 3 part-time officers he deems qualified. Upon hiring they can also be sworn in by Mayor DePaul.
Normally, Council would have an opportunity to meet potential candidates and vote on the hiring individually, but can choose to entrust the decision to their Police Chief, if they vote to do so.
Chief Mahady made the request in order that any part-time officer hired can be “geared up” and ready to assume their duties without a delay. Gear includes uniforms and other items that will need to be ordered for each officer.
There were caveats however.
Police policies and procedures will have to be approved by Council before officers are put on patrol in the borough. Chief Mahady said those items will be ready for Council to review and vote on by the August 24 Council meeting.
Those hired will be on a probationary period of one year.
Assignment of hours and days for the part-timers still need to be developed, that will not exceed the budgeted amount allotted for the police department line item, which falls upon Mayor DePaul.
