It won’t be a $7 million police station like the City of Easton built, but it will be enough to serve the needs of a West Easton Part-Time Police Department.

During Monday night’s Council meeting, Council members voted unanimously (6-0, T. Nodoline absent) to approve a proposed lease agreement with Safety First Volunteer Fire Company to occupy the former Borough Hall building.

The former Borough Hall, located at 301 6th Street, was sold to Safety First decades ago.

The proposed lease, developed through discussions with Safety First leadership, received Safety First’s approval today, with final signatures.

It’s a win-win situation for the Borough and Safety First Volunteer Fire Company.

The borough will have use of a building that is sufficient for a part-time police department and Safety First will see improvements to a building falling into disrepair, due to budgetary constraints.

The Borough of West Easton will be responsible for taxes on the property and will maintain sufficient insurance, as well as the maintenance, operation, and repair of the building. Maintaining the grounds is also part of the agreement.

Money will have to be spent by Council to get it back in shape, as it has been left untended for many years, but it has the space needed for a police headquarters and the equipment they will be receiving in the coming year.

Electric will have to be hooked up to the building on a separate meter. Plumbing fixtures that have been removed will have to be replaced. The floor will need to be re-tiled and some carpentry will need to be done inside for office space, as well as a secured entry area for visitors.

The cost and length of the lease is $1.00 per year, for 10 years, with an option to renew the lease for another 10 years at the end of its initial term.
