West Easton Parking/Plowing Problems Discussed

How can West Easton Borough do the best job possible plowing roads, while not burying cars in the process? It was discussed by the Council last night.

Initially, it was proposed that alternate side of the street parking could be implemented on a voluntary basis. That on the first day all cars would move to one side of the street allowing plows to clean up to the curb on the opposite side. The next day, cars would move to the plowed side, allowing the side unplowed to be done.

It was quickly recognized that this would be difficult to accomplish. It would take cooperation from everyone on each block and that there are likely far too many cars owned by households that would allow for the space needed for all those cars to park on only one side of the street.

Though resident Tricia Mezzacappa spoke out of order from the audience, she actually provided some helpful input and what might be the best solution, if it can be done.

Her suggestion was that once the emergency routes were cleared of snow, residents be allowed to park their vehicles along the curbs of the emergency routes, so that plows could then finish the streets of the borough.

That’s not to say there could be problems trying to do that. Some of the problems that come to mind are:

Can cars actually park along snow emergency routes when a snow emergency is still in affect – especially if it is a state issued emergency?

How are residents notified when parking will be allowed on those emergency routes, so that no resident prematurely moves their car?

How much time do they have to dig out their cars before the plows come through to do the final passes on their street?

How are they notified that the plows are completely done with their street and they can return their cars?

For it to work, it would first have to be determined if the Borough could actually allow cars on the emergency routes and a system then implemented to notify residents that the plows intend to come by again for the curbside pass.

Even with these obstacles, it’s still an idea worth exploring.
