West Easton Awarded $10K Grant For War Monument Area Improvements

It started with a Resolution I introduced, to move a forgotten WWI plaque that was mounted on the backside of the monument recognizing those who served in WWII.

That original Resolution wasn’t passed unanimously, but ultimately succeeded in the WWI plaque being given a new pedestal and a place of prominence. It was rededicated this past Memorial Day.

Having broached the idea with then-Council President DePaul to create a small passive park in the monument area, without distractions of children playing, he was on board. I believe others on Council are also favorable to the idea.

It was my hope that grants might be obtained to create something attractive in the center of our community. It would help negate the unappealing distractions found in the business district as people enter West Easton from Lehigh Drive, passing the least attractive business properties and the Work Release Center.

The first step toward that goal has been provided from Northampton County Council. They have approved a CIPP Grant in the amount of $10,000. A letter confirming the award was received from Northampton County Executive Lamont McClure.

The CIPP Grant is a 50 percent matching grant, meaning West Easton can spend up to $20,000 and see a return of half the money it spends.

In anticipation of the award, the Property Committee had met to discuss possible uses, should the grant be awarded and West Easton Council approves the grant contract that will be coming from the County.

It is hoped that in the first phase, this money will cover the cost of a fountain, cobblestone, benches, tree removals, lighting, and much needed landscaping.

Quotes will be sought from landscapers in the Lehigh Valley area.

Future goals, should additional grants opportunities be found and awarded might include decorative fencing around the perimeter of the property, completion of sidewalks, and aesthetic improvements to the Spring House, but these are only ideas that have yet to be decided.

As a side note, one nice benefit has come from the monument area — A positive story about West Easton, rather than one about a Work Release “Resident” walking off.

Yesterday evening, our always modest and camera shy Mayor DePaul provided the local viewing area with some positive light for West Easton. The WWI Monument was the focus on WFMZ Channel 69 News, as can be seen HERE.
