The West Easton Council began the new year by looking at some 2017 budget items.

Figured in the 2017 budget was a 2 percent pay raise to borough employees. Though employees saw an increase in pay less than a year ago, Council unanimously voted to approve the increase and make it retroactive to January 1st of this year. Another look at pay rates might take place later this year.

Council also approved the $8400 donation to Mary Meuser Library that was budgeted for 2017.

Tabled until the February Council meeting was the $1000 donation to the Wilson Borough Recreation Board. Though the donation was budgeted for 2017 a question arose about whether such a donation would be prudent, considering that it was anticipated Wilson Borough would be readjusting their own donation to a figure lower than the $2000 they had given in previous years.

Also tabled was a “request” for consideration of a $250 donation to Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The request was made via a third party with no written request being presented. Council is hoping to hear from a representative for EMS to explain why they are seeking the donation and what the money will be used for. EMS does not provide free service to residents.

Another item related to the budget for office expenses was a new copier. Council approved the lease of a new copier that will save the Borough more than $1000/yr. The choice of one of two copiers was the topic of discussion. Both are virtually identical in capability, but made by different manufacturers.

Borough Manager Joan Heebner has been given authorization to lease her choice of the copier she prefers. Leasing either results in the monetary savings to the Borough.
